What’s It Like? Our Hiking Experience in Early Spring Kamikochi

We’ve visited Kamikochi in early spring many times — from 2015 through 2026. Here’s what you can expect on the trail from Taisho-ike to Myojin-ike (approx. 10 km round trip).

Taisho-ike Pond: Stunning Views of Mt. Yakedake & the Hotaka Range

The view from Taisho-ike is simply breathtaking. In early spring, the snowcapped peaks of Mt. Yakedake (焼岳) and the Hotaka Range (穂高連峰) are reflected in the crystal-clear pond. If you’re lucky enough to visit before the crowds arrive, you may have this stunning scenery almost entirely to yourself.

Tashiro-ike & Weston Monument: A Peaceful Forest Walk

The Weston Monument — a tribute to Walter Weston, who popularized mountaineering in Japan.

Along the trail, you’ll pass Tashiro-ike, a serene and perfectly clear pond. A little further, you’ll find the Weston Monument, dedicated to British missionary Walter Weston who is credited with introducing modern mountaineering to Japan in the late 19th century.

Wild Monkeys on the Trail! 🐒

Wild Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) are a common sight along the trail!

One of the most exciting parts of visiting Kamikochi in early spring is encountering wild Japanese macaques (snow monkeys / 二ホンザル). They roam freely along the trail and can get surprisingly close!

⚠️ Important: Do NOT make eye contact, feed, or touch the monkeys. Stay calm and walk past quietly. They are wild animals!

💬 Kamepi’s funny story: A large monkey walked straight toward him on the bridge — and gently tapped his leg twice! A nearby foreign visitor burst out laughing. We still laugh about it today 😂

Kappa-bashi Bridge: The Iconic Symbol of Kamikochi

The famous Kappa-bashi bridge with the Hotaka Mountains behind — the most iconic view in Kamikochi.

Kappa-bashi (河童橋) is the most photographed spot in Kamikochi. The suspension bridge spans the Azusa River, with a spectacular backdrop of the Hotaka Range. During peak season it gets very crowded, but in early spring you may find it surprisingly peaceful.

💡 Tip: Stop at the nearby café “Deux Magots (トワ・サンク)” for soft serve ice cream or their famous apple pie! A perfect reward after the walk.

Myojin-ike Pond: A Sacred and Serene Destination

Myojin-ike pond — crystal clear water in a sacred, quiet atmosphere.

About 1 hour from Kappa-bashi, Myojin-ike (明神池) is a sacred pond on the grounds of Hotaka Jinja Okumiya Shrine (穂高神社奥宮). The water is impossibly clear and the atmosphere is quietly spiritual. We always feel refreshed and at peace here.

Note: There is a small entrance fee to see the pond (approx. ¥500). The nearby Kamon-ji Hut (嘉門次小屋) serves iwana (Japanese char) grilled over charcoal — a must-try if it’s open during your visit!

What to Wear & Bring: Essential Gear for Early Spring Kamikochi

April in Kamikochi is still very much winter in terms of conditions. Snow and ice remain on parts of the trail, and temperatures can drop suddenly. Please do not underestimate the mountain environment!
